    SHORT VERSION:

Anyone know how I can enter my room and gain operator status AFTER a person has ALREADY entered my room with my nickname?

    DETAILED VERSION :

I’ve just got someone to help me test my chat nickname on different computers. They entered the chat room on their computer with my nickname (PJ_), and because of the BOT they were NOT granted operator status. I then entered the room with the same nickname, making sure I put my password in the password box. I was NOT granted operator status either, and because there was already a person with my nickname in the room, my nickname was automatically changed. I tried to do the /nickserv identify command, but because my nickname had automatically been changed, this didn’t work.

I am concerned that a malicious person (they may be angry at me for kicking them, etc) may enter my chat room with my nickname and I would not be able to gain operator status.

Anyone know how I can enter my room and gain operator status AFTER a person has ALREADY entered my room with my nickname?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Sounds like a take over! If your nick is registered, try using the ghost command on the person whois using ur nick. /ns ghost nick pass

Than change ur nick back to your original and identify to NickServ. Hopefully that helps If you require any help, pls come to #PreciousMoments and see if anyone can help you there. There are some ppl who are formerly owners/admins of some irc network that might be able to help.

    THANK-YOU!

It worked! I used the command in full /nickserv PJ_ [password] and it kicked the other person off, then I changed my nickname back to PJ_ then used the OP command. It took a while to do all this, and if I wasn’t a fast typer they might have been able to come back in and start it again before I had chance to sort myself out – is there a way to ban them using the ghost command instead of just kick them? (they would deserve it if they stole my name anyway!)

I’m now gonna see if shortened versions of commands (like ns instead of nickserv) work. I wonder how many people realise that the commands can be typed in lowercase with no caps whatsoever unless your nicknake has capitals.

I just want to say thank-you again

    P.S. Shame this isn’t a dating website

Glad it helped you Type /ns help (a list of help is available) If you need to protect your nick, try /ns set kill on (this will prevent other user from using ur nick and NickServ will change their nick to other automatically) Otherwise, the ghost command will work jst as good. I’am available for help in #PreciousMoments with the nick PeeKaBoo.

Well the kill command works but it takes a whole minute to change the nickname – I’ve put a warning about people called PJ or anything similar who haven’t got an @ next to their name not being me, but some people might not read it and 1 minute is enough time to extract private information from someone who thinks they are talking to me – is there anyway I can get it to change a person’s nickname in 7 seconds (that’s enough time for me to type /msg identify [pass])?

Syntax: /nickserv SET KILL (ON | QUICK | IMMED | OFF)

Turns the automatic protection option for your nick on or off. With protection on, if another user tries to take your nick, they will be given one minute to change to another nick, after which NickServ will forcibly change their nick.

If you select QUICK, the user will be given only 20 seconds to change nicks instead of the usual 60. If you select IMMED, user’s nick will be changed immediately without being warned first or given a chance to change their nick; please do not use this option unless necessary. Also, your network’s administrators may have disabled this option.

    or

Syntax: /nickserv SET SECURE (ON | OFF)

Turns NickServ’s security features on or off for your nick. With SECURE set, you must enter your password before you will be recognized as the owner of the nick, regardless of whether your address is on the access list. However, if you are on the access list, NickServ will not auto-kill you regardless of the setting of the KILL option.

Also it’s important to change your nickserv and chanserv password so the person can’t login again at your nick (If they knew your password and kill/secure where on)

But to deny people using the similair nick as yours, you can register nicknames that you don’t want anyone to take. So PJ or P_J (example) and turn off kill and secure for those too
