You can’t run an applet unless you trust it. If you said no when asked if you wanted to give it permission to run it will cause problems. If you still can’t connect have a look at this thread:

Follow the java plugin link and download Sun Microsystem’s java plugin. When this plugin runs the applet again make sure to say yes and it should work.
